Magwayen

Offering candles to Magwayen, Filipina goddess of the ocean and the Underworld. In Bisayan mythology, she is a primordial goddess who, along with Kaptan, God of the sky, created the world and the first humans. 

Like the changing of the tides, Magwayen is a nuanced deity. She can be gentle and nurturing, but when she is angered, she has the ability to conjure tsunamis, floods, and heavy rainfall. She is depicted as a grown woman with long, flowing black hair and is usually accompanied by a variety of marine animals. She often carries a conch shell and blows into it several times to shape shift in times of danger.

Some myths describe her as the personification of water, including the ones that flow into the Underworld, making her one of the very few deities who can enter and leave the land of the dead. Some say she ferries all souls to the afterlife. 

Because these candles drip so easily, it's the perfect time to practice some candle divination, also known as Carromancy. Watch how the candle burns. Do you see figures in the wax?
