Athena
When naming the Gods and Goddesses of Greek mythology, one name that never ceases to be listed is Athena, goddess of war and wisdom, Zeus' favorite child, the guiding light of heroism and justice.
The story goes that Athena bore from no mother, but from the surface of Zeus' own forehead. She was fully grown, and completely dressed in armor with weapons in either hand. From there she went on to play important rolls throughout Greek mythology, guiding and sometimes fighting alongside heroes such as Hercules and Perseus.
While she is more notoriously known for being the goddess of warfare, she is also associated with the arts: spinning and weaving, specifically. The term can often symbolize making ties between people or life situations. Artemis was also said to be associated with this particular art form, but while Artemis wove ties between mother and child, Athena spun relationships between soldiers in battle. Contrary to her brother Ares, ruling over the bloodlust and violence of war, Athena ruled over the excellence of skilled combat, victory, and discipline.
I created the base color of these candles to represent the shade of rich olive oil, the tree being of great symbolism to Athena. This stems from the myth of her and Poseidon as they fought for possession over a Greek city. They competed by showering the citizens with food and extravagant gifts, but it was Athena who won them over by creating olive trees, and thus the city of Athens was born. The candle color also has undertones of brown, symbolizing the little owl that often sits upon her shoulder. According to myths, the owl revealed truths to her and spoke of wisdom and knowledge to assist her in decisions and war strategy. The owl was said to illuminate Athena's “blind side,” allowing her to see the entire truth that laid before her.
Mica powder has been directly infused into the candle, creating a galaxy of stars that flow sporadically as its heated with fire. The light gray drip symbolizes the shade of Athena's eyes.
ɪᴛᴇᴍ ᴅᴇsᴄʀɪᴘᴛɪᴏɴ: Two 6 inch taper candles rolled in locally sourced herbs. These taper candles have been ritually rolled in herbs associated with Athena such as rose, bay laurel, rosemary, and cedar.
𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐓: These candles melt beautifully and are safe to burn indoors, however, PLEASE be wary of the flame. The more herbs, the bigger and taller the flame will be. Always supervise your candles while burning. These candles have very burnable botanicals. Some herbs may crackle when caught on fire, such as cedar and juniper.
Always burn in a reliable candle holder or in a fireproof dish.
