Offering candles to Psyche: Greek goddess of passion, romance, and the soul. She is often depicted as a beautiful maiden with butterfly wings protruding from her back.Β

Psyche is most well known in the tale of her and Eros. She was first a mortal before ascending to divinity. She was exceptionally beautiful, so much so that people began to worship her instead of the goddess Aphrodite, arousing the jealousy of the goddess of love. In retaliation, Aphrodite instructed her son Eros (the god of love and notorious matchmaker), to make Psyche fall in love with the vilest creature on Earth. However, when Eros saw Psyche, he was captivated by her beauty and accidentally pricked himself with his own arrow, falling deeply in love with her. Eros took Psyche back to his palace in secret.

Psyche lived in Cupid’s palace in solitary luxury, but she never actually saw Eros. He came to her only at night when he joined her in a cover of darkness. Upon learning of Psyche's mysterious relationship, her jealous sisters insisted that she discover the true identity of her faceless lover.Β

One night, Psyche lit a candle to gaze at her partner. Hypnotized by his beauty, she allowed the candle wax to drip on him and he awoke angered by her mistrust. He abandoned her and his palace dissolved like mist.

Seeking forgiveness and reunion, she ventured to the only one who knew of Cupid’s whereabouts: his mother. Aphrodite greeted her cruelly and with disdain. She was subjected to a series of difficult tasks, each more harrowing than the last. culminating in a journey to Hades to borrow The final task led her deep into the underworld, where she was sent to borrow Persephone's enchanted box of beauty. Psyche overcame every challenge, but as she made her way back from the land of the dead, an irresistible temptation gripped her β€” the urge to open the box, seeking just a glimpse of the allure it contained before returning to Eros. Yet, the dark forces within the box proved too powerful, a deadly temptation for any mortal to withstand.

Psyche died, but Eros, who had been observing all the while, rescued her. He carried her to Olympus where he pleaded his case before Zeus who gave her a cup of ambrosia that revived her and caused her to become immortal.

Their relationship symbolizes the power of union and the soul, how love can conquer any obstacle and persevere. Their myth is celebrated as one of the greatest love stories on Earth.

Psyche is said to be gentler than her mother-in-law. Petition Psyche for matters of the heart, to attract romance, or during times of change and transformation.Β
